Turkish Grand Prix back on the 2021 Formula 1 schedule
Formula 1 has today confirmed that the Intercity Istanbul Park rejoined the 2021 F1 calendar with the track set to host the Turkish Grand Prix between 1st – 3rd October.
The sport removed the Turkish Grand Prix from the calendar earlier this season due to international travel restrictions. However, F1 made clear that it intended to find another spot on the 2021 schedule for the Istanbul race, and the sport has continuously held discussion with the promoter.
After the action got going at the Red Bull Ring last year following the coronavirus-enforced shutdown period, the sport introduced stringent safety measures that have allowed the teams, drivers and staff to travel safely.
So far this season, Formula One has conducted over 44,000 tests with 27, positive cases a rate of 0.06%, with most coming during the earlier part of the season. Alongside the regular tests, a significant proportion of the F1 community has been vaccinated already and the sport expects that all will have had the opportunity to do so by the end of the summer.
Commenting on the announcement, Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said: “We are delighted to be coming back to Turkey to Intercity Istanbul Park circuit. We hope to see another fantastic race again in one of the best tracks in the world. We want to thank the Intercity Istanbul Park management and Mr. Vural Ak for his personal efforts to make this event to happen.
“We have shown that we can continue to adapt and there is huge interest in our sport and the hope from many locations to have a Grand Prix. We have had very good conversations with all the other promoters since the start of the year and continue to work closely with them during this period,” Domenicali concluded.
