There was no more performance to extract, claims Alonso

Having delivered another disappointing performance in yesterday's Austrian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso sounded a negative note, claiming that there is simply no more to extract from his Aston Martin.

Both Aston Martin cars put themselves into the top-10 in free practice, but the AMR24 was not able to maintain this going into Sprint Qualifying.

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was in danger in the opening segment, but managed to make it out of SQ1. However, his progress was halted in the middle segment of the sprint qualifying session as he set only the 13th quickest lap.

Speaking of his experience in sprint qualifying, the Spaniard said that he was content with his laps, but he felt that there was no more to extract from his AMR24.

"It was very tight out there as we expected. I was quite happy with my laps in Sprint Qualifying and I felt we extracted the maximum lap-time in both SQ1 and SQ2.

"Sadly, it wasn't enough to make it into SQ3 today. I think it will be very difficult to score any points tomorrow, but we will take as much information from the Sprint race as possible."

His team-mate Lance Stroll looked competitive on the soft tyres in the sole one-hour practice, but his performance faded on the medium compound in sprint qualifying.

The Canadian, who has freshly signed a new contract with Aston Martin, will line up in P12 in today's 24-lap sprint race.

"We still have some work to do, but the car had a bit more pace today. I was pushing hard out there to try and get the most out of the lap, but just lost it slightly in the final corner.

"I think we'd have squeezed into SQ3 without that. We'll do our homework tonight and see how we go in the Sprint tomorrow."
