ANALYSIS: Ferrari and Red Bull set the pace in the pit lane
Reigning world champion Max Verstappen has built up a sizeable advantage in the Drivers' Championship, and his team, Red Bull has contributed to his lead with impressive pit stops. F1Technical's lead journalist Balazs Szabo delivers his latest analysis.
Red Bull and Ferrari have been setting the pace in the pit lane. The Milton Keynes-based team has completed the quickest tyre change so far, having serviced Max Verstappen’s car in Shanghai in just 1.90.
Having been chased by Lando Norris at the Spanish Grand Prix, Red Bull needed perfect stops with Verstappen, and they have just done that. The Austro-British outfit’ quickest stop took just 1.92s.
Ferrari have completed the third quickest stop so far, having serviced Charles Leclerc’s SF-24 in Miami in just 1.94s.
In total, there have been six sub 2-second tyre changes so far, four of them have come from Red Bull while the other two have been performed by Ferrari. Interestingly, the Milton Keynes-based outfit completed three pit stops that took exactly 2 seconds with Sergio Perez having been the driver in all these tyre services.
The overall tenth quickest tyre change was performed by the Visa Cash RB outfit with the Faenza-based outfit having serviced Daniel Ricciardo’s car in 2.01 seconds at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Average pit stop time is usually a better indication for a team’s performance than the absolute best time, particularly in races where drivers complete multiple pit stops.
Interestingly, Ferrari and Red Bull have been the most impressing teams when considering average times as well. The Austrian team appeared more consisten at the beginning of the year, but Ferrari has been moreimpressing since the Canadian Grand Prix.
