Formula 1 to use low-carbon power solutions at all European Grands Prix from 2025

Ahead of this weekend's Italian Grand Prix, Formula 1 has announced that it will use low-carbon power solutions at all European Grands Prix from 2025, teaming up with Aggreko.

With Formula 1 eager to reach its Net Zero by 2030 goal, it has announced a multi-year partnership with Aggreko, a world-leading provider of temporary power solutions, to deliver innovative low-carbon energy generation systems at all European Grands Prix from the 2025 season. As part of the deal, Aggreko will become an Official Provider of F1.

The two parties have been working together since 2023 when they used a centralised power generation compound for the first time. The pilot project was successful, having led to a reduction of carbon emissions by >90% within the Paddock, Pit Lane, and broadcast areas compared to the 2022 event.

Formula One noted that "the compound is powered by renewable sources such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), biofuel, solar panels, and battery storage systems."

The system was used at the Austrian Grand Prix this year for the second time before making its appearance at the Hungarian Grand Prix as well. Monza will host the last round of the European leg of the season, and F1 will use the centralised power generation compound again.

Formula One has now confirmed that the system will be used across the European rounds of the 2025 F1 season.

The expansion means that stakeholders, including Formula 1, teams, and the FIA, are not required to use or bring their own generators as enough power is produced through the centralised system to supply all garages and motorhomes across the weekend.

Furthermore, "the system will also power the Pit Wall, the Timing Room, the Formula 1 Event Technical Centre (ETC) where the at-track broadcast operations are housed, and the International TV Compound, where all F1 host broadcasters operate from at event. It significantly reduces the number of individual generators on-site in these operational areas and therefore will reduce the associated emissions from transportation to site."

Expanding on the announcement, Ellen Jones, Head of ESG, Formula 1 said: ”The entire paddock is part of our Net Zero by 2030 commitment and solutions like the low-carbon energy generation system combine technological innovation with coordinated action.

"In practice, this means that we can achieve significant carbon reductions in this space – and we look forward to continuing to showcase how we can deliver more sustainable events.”

Commenting on the important step, Robert Wells, President Aggreko Europe and Aggreko Event Services, said: “Aggreko has an unrivalled track record of delivering power transition solutions across the globe, in the most demanding, challenging and mission critical environments to ensure the needs of our clients are met consistently to the highest standards.

"As a global leader, we have an important role to play in the energy transition and we’re thrilled that Formula 1 has chosen Aggreko to help them on their journey to be Carbon Net Zero by 2030. We look forward to continuing working with Formula 1, and together energising change for a positive future.”
