Hungary's Formula One track, the Hungaroring has announced that it has been handed a two-star environment award from the sport's governing body, the FIA.

Sustainable development has become one of the main topics in motorsport in recent years. Formula One's governing body, the FIA awards one, two or three stars to circuits according to their level of sustainability.

The Paris-based body has now announced that the Hungaroring has been given two stars after this year’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

The process has focused on a complex, comprehensive analysis of sustainability: the day-to-day operation of the Hungaroring, facility management and event organisation. These areas were examined in terms of environmental objectives and processes, such as energy, waste, water, soil pollution, procurement processes and air quality.

The Hungaroring had to apply for the stars by submitting various documents online, and after the Formula 1 Hungarian GP, the result was announced: the Hungarian circuit was awarded Two Star FIA Environmental Accreditation.

"It is important for our track to keep up with all other venues in the world in all respects, including sustainability, and we are constantly making efforts to do so. Sustainability aspects have also been important to us during the redevelopment project until 2026," said Zsolt Gyulay, CEO of Hungaroring Sport Zrt.
