Who is the most successful drivers and team in Texas?
Ahead of the 45th United States Grand Prix, F1Technical's lead journalist Balazs Szabo delivers the answer for who has been the most successful driver and constructor in the history of races that were referred to as US Grand Prix.
Austin is the second of three races this season in the USA, following on from Miami and preceding Las Vegas. It seems that Formula 1 has finally found its way into the psyche of the star-spangled fans, even if there were three races back in 1983, in Long Beach, Detroit and Las Vegas.
In fact, the USA sits fourth on the list of countries that have hosted the most races with 77, although that includes 11 Indianapolis 500 races that counted towards the Drivers’ World Championship from 1950 to 1960. Heading this list are Great Britain and Germany on 79 apiece and Italy on 107. There have been eleven venues for the USA GP: Austin (11), Dallas (1), Detroit (7), Indianapolis (19), Las Vegas (3), Long Beach (8), Miami (3), Phoenix (3), Riverside (1), Sebring (1) and Watkins Glen (20).
Considering only the races that were titled as United States Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton holds the record for most wins. The Briton has won six times in total of which he recorded his second career victory at Indianapolis driving for McLaren. Shockingly, he has won in the first four years of the hybrid era between 2014 and 2017.
Michael Schumacher is the second most successful race driver in the United States with five victories. After securing his first triumph in 2000, the German commenced a commanding run of success in 2003 and remained unbeaten until 2006.
When it comes to the number of wins in the United States, Max Verstappen, Graham Hill and Jim Clark claim the third spot with three victories apiece. Interestingly, the Scottish and British driver dominated the era between 1962 and 1968 with winning all six races in this period of time. While Clark took all his three wins for Lotus, Hill was victorious for BRM.
The list of two-time US Grand Prix winners comprises the likes of Ayrton Senna, Carlos Reutemann, James Hunt and Jackie Stewart.
Regarding the constructors, Ferrari is the most successful one in the United States Grand Prix. The Italian outfit has taken victory ten times. Despite this record, the Maranello-based team had to wait long for their first success in America. After the first editions of the event were dominated by Lotus, BRM and Tyrell, Niki Lauda took Ferrari’s first victory in the United Stated in 1975.
Lotus and McLaren are the second most successful teams with eight victories, followed by Mercedes with five wins and Red Bull with four victories. BRM is fourth on this list with three wins, while Tyrell is the only other repeat winning constructor with two triumphs.
