New components for further successes
Just one more day to go to the San Marino Grand Prix weekend. On Sunday, Imola will host its 26th Formula One race. The 'Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari' has its special characteristics. Willy Rampf, Technical Director Chassis, talks about the BMW Sauber F1.06.
"The BMW Sauber F1.06 will line up for the San Marino Grand Prix with both a modified rear section and a new front wing, which promises increased downforce," reveals Willy Rampf. This doesn't come as a surprise as downforce has always been a key factor at Imola, with the brakes also being vital. "Imola not only demands a lot of downforce, it also places huge demands on the brakes," adds the 52-year old. "For this reason we use maximum brake cooling and the optimum brake specification for this race."
The high kerbs represent another special characteristic of the classic track. The drivers have to drive directly across the kerbs to have the chance of setting competitive lap times. "This places considerable mechanical loads on the chassis and suspension," explains Rampf.
The 4,933 kilometre circuit features long bends and short straights, thus making overtaking particularly difficult. Consequently, a promising grid position and good strategy will be particularly important, here. Nevertheless, Rampf is optimistic: "I'm confident that we are in the position to go out there and put in a good performance once again."
