Wurz tops second practice session
Austrian Alex Wurz has given his Williams team an enormous boost with the quickest time in second free practice, to add to his sheet-topping time in first practice this morning. His time of 1:32.675 was 0.6 seconds slower than his best from this morning as most drivers opted for longish runs.
He was followed on the timesheets by Fernando Alonso whose best lap of 1:33.579 was almost a second adrift of the Williams. However the Renault F1 Team will not be overly concerned about this fact as Wurz is a Friday driver and is therefore more likely to have been running higher revs, as he does not need to conserve his engine.
Fernando finished 0.4 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari, and following their epic tussle in Imola two weeks ago, it looks like the Nürburgring is set to play Round 2 to the battle of champions this weekend.
Robert Doornbos surprised many with the fourth fastest time of the day, despite the fact that his Red Bull (and that of team-mates Coulthard and Klien) looked to handle like a complete pig through the first sector of the track. Anthony Davidson was fifth for Honda with Ralf Schumacher sixth for Toyota. Jenson Button was seventh in the second Honda, with Kubica again impressive in eight for BMW. Giancarlo Fisichella was ninth for the Renault F1 Team and in tenth place was the utterly incredible Adrian Sutil, making his first appearance as a Friday driver here in Germany… for Midland!
Taking Wurz out of the equation, the top 15 drivers were very closely matched, with a second covering Alonso in second and Barrichello in 15th. Qualifying looks set to be another enticing affair tomorrow, with all the top teams fighting over mere tenths of a second.
