Who was Edouard Michelin? A hommage

By on

Yesterday, a boat accident took the life of Edouard Michelin, the managing director of France's tyre-maker Michelin. Michelin, 43, was on a fishing trip off Ile de Sein island in Brittany when he died. The cause of his death was not clear.

Edouard Michelin was born on August 13, 1963 in Clermont-Ferrand in France and was the son of François Michelin and Bernadette Montagne. After graduating as an engineer at the 'Ecole Centrale de Paris', he joined the Michelin Group in 1985, which was then headed by his father François. Even as son of the boss, Edouard had to work his way up. Initially he was production manager at the Puy-en Velay plant in France and after that team manager at Montceau-les-Mines. After a while, Edouard Michelin was appointed CEO of Michelin North America, in charge of both the indstrial plant and the truck UOT sales and distribution.

In 1987, Michelin completed his military service in the navy on French nuclear submarines. After this, he continued working for the Michelin company. On June 11, 1999, Edouard was appointed Michelin’s new head by the Annual Shareholders Meeting. This 110 years after the founding of the company by his ancestors.

Yesterday, the life of this crafty businessman came suddenly to an end during a boat trip. Edouard leaves six children and his wife Cécil behind.

The whole F1 Technical Team would like to send their condolences to his family, friends and all his colleagues at Michelin.
