JV targets 4th place in team's battle
Jacques Villeneuvehas targeted fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship as his goal for the season, believing that it’s only a matter of time before the BMW Sauber F1 Team moves ahead of Honda in the standings.
BMW are currently holding onto fifth place having bagged 17 points in the opening eight races compared to fifth placed Honda's 29. However, in recent events, it's been Jacques' team that's had the upper hand.
"We're fifth and I think that's higher than the team wanted at the start of the season, so that's already good," Jacques Villeneuve told the Canadian Press.
"But we can reach for fourth. That would be great. It's achievable."
Having said that, he remains realistic and concedes that it will be a while before BMW are able to challenge Renault for the title.
"It will be very difficult to get close to the team leading the Championship," he said. "They are a step ahead of everyone else."
However, Jacques is confident that on BMW's good days they can challenge the likes of Ferrari and McLaren.
"For the other two top teams - on a very good day for us and a very bad day for them, there's a small possibility.
"We're still behind. We still have a lot of work to do catch them. It depends on how many improvements we make during the season. By the end of the year, we may be closer than expected."
However, Jacques is still relishing driving a car that he can drive 'on the edge', prompting many observers to suggest that he has rediscovered his very best form in F1.
Describing this year's charger as like being a "second skin", JV added: "I'm having more fun than the last few years behind the wheel. It was a little monster to drive last year. It is not the same case at all now."
