Q+A Sakon Yamamoto

By on

Sakon Yamamoto is one of the F1 drivers that isn't really known by the majority of the Formula One fans. The Japanese F1 driver started his career in F1 as third driver for the Jordan team during the Japanese Grand Prix in 2005. In 2006, the F1 adventure really started for Sakon as he started as test driver for Super Aguri since the British GP and drove his first GP at Hockenheim during the German GP.

How difficult was it for you to come into Formula One halfway through the season?

"It was a really difficult decision because I already had a contract with a Formula Nippon Team and a Super GT race team. Formula One is my target but however I needed to consider the others."

How satisfied have you been with the progress that you have made so far?

"I’m satisfied with what I’ve done so far, but I’m not satisfied from a results’ point of view because I haven’t finished a race yet. But I think I’m always progressing every time so that’s okay."

What has been the most difficult thing for you to get to grips with in Formula One?

"The PR side is completely new for me, that is to say having a specific schedule set. And also you have to be careful how you say something, because what you think is a small one word, for example, becomes a bigger one, so that was difficult."

You completed your first full F1 test at the Monza circuit before the race last weekend, how did you feel and what did you have to do?

"It was first time for me and for the team to participate in an official test with the SA06. Unfortunately we lost the first day’s running due to a number of issues, but I completed more than 60 laps on day two and we were able to try a variety of things on the car. I think that we have been able to make some improvements with the new car, so I am happy about that."
