A small step forward for this race - Fisico

The ING Renault Formula One Team’s Italian driver, Giancarlo Fisichella, says that the team has made progress since Bahrain, but is expecting a tough Spanish weekend. Here follows an interview with the Roman.

Giancarlo, before talking about your hopes for the weekend, let’s come back to some statements that were recently published in the press.

"Honestly, I don’t know where they came from. Like you I read them yesterday and I did not understand anything. These very negative comments about the team never came from me. Of course, the situation is not easy at the moment, but I would never show such a lack of respect to the people who are working day and night to get to the bottom of our problems. I’m both disappointed and angry by these so-called quotes."

The team tested on the Barcelona circuit last week. What information did you glean from the tests?

"We tested some new front suspension and evolutions to the rear wing. We made progress and the car’s a bit quicker. But it’s not enough to allow us to fight for pole and victory. The Barcelona weekend’s going to be a fairly difficult one. We’ll need a little more time to understand where exactly we need to work to improve."

Have you got an idea of what areas have to be examined in this search?

"We’re heading in the right direction, that’s for sure. We’re beginning to see in what areas we have to concentrate our efforts thanks to the accurate measurements made during last week’s test."

Is it a difficult situation to have to live with?

"It’s frustrating. Right from the very first race we realised that we weren’t the quickest, and after three grands prix we’re still behind the leaders. But in the team the motivation is as strong as ever, and everybody’s pulling in the same direction."

In your opinion when will we see some major evolutions?

"Soon, I hope, but it’s not as simple as that. The team is working twenty-four hours a day, but it will take time. The answer may come in a week’s time, or in a month. But when we find out exactly what’s not working, then it won’t be long until we start making progress."
