A problem with the refuelling rigs - Permane

By on

The ING Renault F1 Team’s chief engineer, Alan Permane, explains why both Renault drivers, Heikki Kovalainen and Giancarlo Fisichella had to have three pit stops today during the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona.

Alan, it looks like Renault went for a very daring strategy today!

“That’s not exactly how we planned it! In fact, we ran into problems with the refuelling rigs on three occasions today; neither was working properly. Heikki’s did not put in enough petrol on his first and second stops, and Giancarlo had the same problem when he pitted for the second time.”

Do you know what caused the problem?

“Not yet. We’ll have to dismantle the rigs to find out.”

Apart from this hitch, how did the race go?

“Pretty well, I think. Of course with three stops it all became a lot more complicated. Heikki drove a very solid race and he could’ve finished fifth or sixth were it not for the refuelling problems. The car was very consistent and our race performances confirmed the progress we’ve made since Bahrain. We’re a bit disappointed with today’s result but we’re still confident.”
