Motor racing is worth taking all these risks - Heidfeld

The safety standards in Formula One have been improved massively, in recent years, still, being a Formula One driver has remained a rather risky job, nevertheless. For Nick Heidfeld, however, this situation never has been a reason to have doubts about his chosen profession.

"I have been a motor racer for nearly 20 years now and it's a completely normal thing, for me," says the German. "I'm not sitting in the car and thinking: what a dangerous job!"

Robert Kubica's massive crash in Montreal highlighted both aspects of Formula One: on the one hand, technical innovations help to limit the risk of serious injuries and on the other, it demonstrated once again that there never will be 100 percent safety at the pinnacle of motor racing.

That's a fact Heidfeld is well aware of. "Quite obviously I know that racing in Formula One can be dangerous - despite all the safety improvements made on both circuits and cars, in recent years," adds Nick. "You just have to ask yourself if competing at the pinnacle of motor racing is worth taking these risks. And to date, my answer always was: Yes!"
