The races are the icing on the cake - Heidfeld
Despite the current espionage affair and the fact that Formula One racing is becoming ever more technical, BMW Sauber F1 driver Nick Heidfeld still believes the ultimate truth lies on the track. Now he explains what he likes best about his job.
"The best aspect of my job is definitely the driving," the 30-year-old comments. According to the German driver, the fascination lies in the actual driving sensation as well as the ability to control the F1.07 at the limit. However, the current fifth driver in the world championship emphasises that one particular side of his job makes it all worth while: "The races are simply the icing on the cake: the competition, the duels, the overtaking manoeuvres," Nick explains.
Nevertheless, not everything the job entails is as much fun as competing in races: "Obviously, it is fun to travel to all these different countries," Heidfeld says. "To be honest, however, I like to relax at the end of the season and simply stay at home. There are many different aspects that come with this job, some of which are fun, others that aren't."
The risk of being a Formula One racing driver, on the other hand, plays an inferior role for Nick, even if he is aware of the potential danger. "You simply have to ask yourself if it's worth taking the risk," Nick comments. "So far, I have always been able to answer this question with yes. In addition, I've been racing for 20 years now. It is completely normal for me."
