Even though the 017 was a development of the successful 1987 car, the car was hardly a success. Only in the hands of Palmer were points possible, totaling just 5 points at the end of the season thanks to two 5th and one 6th place finish.

The last two chassis that were built were later modified and named Tyrrell 017B to run the first race of the 1989 season.
