Sauber's sidepods (Front) are huge. Too bad there isn't a Ferrari to see its rear

All bar the Saubr have the marks across the tarmac. This should allow an approximate scaling of the images with overlays to show lengths. As the widths must all be the same, there should be reasonable accuracy.

Judging by those pics the Williams, Ferrari, STR and Renault should have a very similar wheelbase, McL slightly shorter.
In the other group it's MGP>>RBR and Haas

The Force India is too far to the right to compare it.

Merc 378 (last year calculated as 376, same this year so it's just 2cm off)

the ellipses give me the center of the wheel/the axle AND allow me to (roughly) find the middle of the car, this is where is 'measure' the wheel and then the wheelbase in pixels which gives me the length in cm

The results aren't precise of course, they nevertheless give an idea of relations between the wheelbases (maybe ... lol) and the Merc is just 0.5% off - given the low resolution i'd say that's not too bad

Again ... this is probably not very exact ...

371 Renault
369 Haas and Toro Rosso
368 Ferrari
367 Williams
364 RedBull
360 McLaren


359 Force India - but this one had a lot of distortion by being so far to the right so it's probably REALLY wrong

AMuS used the top down pic of the Force India as a cover pic for a recent article (it wasn't included in their gallery back then)

Since this angle is way better i have redone the wheelbase estimate and as expected the car is longer than the old result at ~362 cm

I've decided to do three measurements per car in order to 'verify'what i'm doing...



Here's an example:
between the orange lines
a =76.628px
a* =79.176px
a**=80.333px
between the yellow lines
b =78.366px
b* =80.351px
b**=82.081px
between the pink lines
c =426.527px
c* =436.629px
c**=446.261px

The math

((a+b)/2)/67 = x

c/x = length

so:
134 c/(a+b)=length

One example
134cm*426.527px/(76.628px+78.366px) = 57154.618cm / 154,994 = 368.75 cm

The other two results were 368.75cm and 366.76cm so the average is ~368 cm

F1.com has the Ferrari at 367.8 cm

It would be the easiest way to compare the cars as there is a point of reference to know how to scale the images.

tbh I thought the Ferrari and Merc were too far apart in those images to put them next to each other ... or at least to properly compare them ... but ... there you go ... i did my best to correct for the angle etc without ruining the proportions of the ferrari, you can still see that some stuff is not in the exact right place but this is the best i could do

Those are great images. It seems easy to say that the Mercedes has the longest car and the longest wheelbase. What I found really interesting is that the Ferrari and Red Bull appear to be about the same overall length with Ferrari having a longer wheelbase.

The differences in suspension design and layout is also quite amazing to see. The Red Bull and Ferrari have those amazing side pods vs the conservative Mercedes.

Mclaren's size 0 concept is also on display. It seems to me that it is short in total and wheelbase length and obviously the airbox is much smaller then everybody else's car. However the mid part of the Mclaren around the sidepod seems to be much wider then everybody else.

What I found really interesting is that the Ferrari and Red Bull appear to be about the same overall length with Ferrari having a longer wheelbase.

The front and rear projections are determined from the wheel centre line. You can't have a longer car without having a longer wheel base. If the cars are the same overall length, they must have the same wheel base. Unless someone is using less than the allowed plan areas of front and rear wings, and that's unlikely.

The wheel base can be different even if the car length is the same. The ferrari looks to have pushed it's front suspension forward vs the Red Bull.
