Well, he left a gap on the left and then lewis suddenly turned right. I can imagine Max tried to countersteer to get out of the way.

He left a gap on the left and then began to close it slowly into a part of the track that narrows before it opens up on the straight.

Also I don't blame Lewis for being apprehensive about passing Max at all.
