Red Bull RB18 Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Also the car had the old HRC logo.
He he, I remember when F1 cars actually did have steel suspension arms with CF covers.
Steel suspension arms is not that long ago really. Williams FW15 had it in 1994. It was one of them that punctured Senna’s crash helmet. Also recall the pit crew trying to unbend the track-rod on Hill’s car after Schuey had nerfed him in Adelaide.

I'm pretty sure there was a lot newer car than that with them - didn't one team end up running carbon wrapped steel arms temporarily for a race or two after finding a flaw in the carbons ones design at testing a few years back?

28 years is a long time ago! Compare 1966 and 1994 to see the same time difference.

I think people are most upset at RB calling this the RB18 and doubling down on social media, as opposed to calling it what it is, a livery / sponsor reveal.

My guess is Liberty won’t like this and will force teams to unveil real cars after this year. They’re probably looking at NASCAR and all the press they got with their NextGen cars and drooling.

Liberty can’t force the teams to present anything, forget about “real cars”, they can’t even force them to have a launch for “a car”.

While NASCAR got a lot of press when their next gen cars were launched, F1 is having a couple of weeks of non-stop press with how the car launches are scheduled… I agree that is a shame that it wasn’t called a “Livery Launch” or “Livery Reveal” which is what we actually got, but it did for RBR exactly what it needed to do, make a lot of noise.

In following years we will get closer to finish product reveals since there will be stability in the regulations and the launches will be of evolutions of this year’s cars.

Red Bull were ultra secretive last year and even held a filming day with a car 2 years old in a year where 90% of the car was carried over from 2020 anyway. Not at all surprised they would pull this although I feel really disrespected as a fan, I understand why they did it

I really hope it isn't a trend. Mercedes will probably do the same

I also fully expect McLaren to be a livery launch (which is why they are doing a simultaneous launch across all categories that they are racing in).

I honestly don’t think so. It will be real car, but with a plain floor, generic front wing & no funky stuff

There is no benefit in hiding things like air box, rear wing, sidepod shapes etc. it is all either far too late to change this season, or spec parts anyway

Looking at that rear wing I don’t understand how that supports DRS in any way. It is not a movable part?

Minardi were using them in, I think it was, 2000.

Easy: the car you present at your launch is the car you must run on the first day of the pre-season test.

That would at least force them to launch a runnable car.

Put a fence somewhere near the LL of Red Bull, Hinge the rear flap from that. Easy.

What if this IS the a preliminary version of the RB18? Since the new regs forbid loads of areas of the car not to be developed, the actual space for your own fingerprint is diminished quite a bit. So, although it probably is the FIA showcar in RB livery, I wouldn't be that much surprised when the actual RB18 for testing is not that far away from these pictures.
