Giorgio Piola in this video says that he is highly unimpressed by the MR22.

It's huge and goofy in his opinion. Too much similar to the FIA showcar.

Also, he suspect Aston could be one of the teams that "may have got it all wrong" referring to the recent words by James Allison, considering the links between Mercedes and AM.

His colleague Franco Nugnes also wrote that "the first impression is that the car could struggle to reach the minimum 795kg weight limit" (weird comment, imho, cause... on which data?)

Interesting, and aligns with the rumour we heard earlier in the year (and it’s been floated against post-launch) that Aston aren’t particularly happy with it… time will tell

If I recall, the force Indias sometimes struggled with being overweight.

On the black bits in front of the pull rod? That’s the access panel for the rear suspension I think

Possibly! But sorry my question was about airflow off that region and onto the top of the diffuser/rear wing.

If you look at the Haas engine cover for comparison, it’s the more ‘jelly mould’ shape we’ve been used to over the past few years where that area is essentially flat.

I understand the ‘double floor’ concept, so I guess my question is - do people think there is more benefit from having totally free space in this region (Haas) and freeing up airflow entirely to the rear, or this solution where there is a large protuberance that looks like it’s ‘in the way’ of the airflow, but actually the airflow from underneath that section is more ‘energised’ to the diffuser?

These two cars are ambition wise on the other side of the spectrum. HAAS knows, with their funding and design department, they can’t take any risks. They probably said to Dallara; “go conservative and build a steady platform”, with the hope some team will have it so wrong, they won’t come in last. AM of course has the ambition to punch above its weight and more funds, people, etc, so, they need to take some risks. Who knows, if it works they fight with McLaren and Ferrari for third…

I do a lot of 3D work and that angle does not line up with the top of the side pod even with perspective turned on. The top of sidepod is almost level front to back.
Pretty sure it's the radiators.

Piola had the aero layout of the Aston predicted almost to a T a few weeks ago. I think his source at Aston is actually legit.

I agree, the view is from fairly low. Normally you wouldn't expect to see the last louvres almost being obscured by the bottom of the intake. The perspective and resolution/colour makes it seem more like a rad.

I do my fair share of 3D CAD work as well.

By pushing the sidepods as far forward as the rules allows, teams can basically bypass the blockage from the SIP by placing them behind the rads it looks like, so teams looks to have a lot of up and down freedom in how the inlet is shaped with minimal radiuses/leading edge, but they are a bit limited on the overall width of the opening with how the rules dictates the sharp geometry we can see on the flat spot of the side pods here.

Note: I'm definitely not certain about exactly where things are or how big they are in the side pods so my illustration is just a rough positioning of the SIP (pink line) and the rads positioned forward of that line.

We'll have to see during race weekends but I wonder by how far the teams can trim down the front and rear wings if they have generated a very strong floor to have the aero balance close to the center of the car.

A nice detail that doesn't do anything for performance, they have shaped the driver cooling opening on the nose like a miniature Aston Martin grill.
