McLaren MCL36

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I would really like a closer look at that rear suspension. It’s definitely pushrod.
Yes, we havent seen this since forever. Actually, have we ever seen this? That looks so weird.
Teams used to run with pushrod set up until RB started in 2009 going pull rod. Last time I remember seeing that at rear was on 150Italia, and few other cars in 2011

Interesting that there is no shots from the rear. Maybe they have found a loophole in that area

Guy's just some context for those who are saying it look's basic in some area's:- James Key tells us it's the real car, with a few omissions:

"We have hidden some bits and pieces because there are some sensitive areas for obvious reasons, but everyone will see them anyway when we run the car."

Obviously, the cars are different mechanically and aero wise, but from the overhead, I think James Key has a trademark at this point.

Long nose, slim sidepods, cooling mounted up high. I'm guessing this car will be a low drag speedster like the last one.

If this is the brake duct… That’s ridiculously small!

It most definitely isn’t.
Thanks… If it was… Damn!

So I'm not going crazy! It really is a pushrod at the rear? What could the motivation be?

That's a lot of floor space.

So here's my crazy theory on what they are doing with the venturi tunnels.

Image

It's a bit crude, and they aren't exactly shaped like this but you get the idea. They might be using the full width of the floor rather than just the area the rules try to force them to use. I suspect they'll need to seal the edge of the floor to make this work, which is possibly why we aren't see any images of the strakes or the t-tray area.

Yes, but that was more or less a conventional double-wishbone setup with pushrod passed within top wishbone span. On MCL36 it is multilink with the pushrod slanted to the front heavily.

Noticed a bunch of small ridges along the front wing before it bends up to the "end-plate". Looks like they are trying to generate vortices to skirt around the front tyre for some wake management.

Edit: appears to be a render issue with the objects not aligned correctly. The rules state there should be no discontinuity in this area, and therefore would be illegal. There's another lower down view that shows it better as being misaligned render meshes.

Quickly hoping on the forum to ask what the hell is going on with the suspension?

I retract my original reaction, it's a lot more interesting than I thought - though obviously hiding a lot.
