(e.g. it's not a linear spring rate).
Bingo. Not even close.

Interestingly they call it the “McLAREN MCL36A” on the website. Maybe it’s something I’ve not noticed before but have only ever seen MCL33, MCL35 “M” (for Mercedes)

Maybe already working on a B-Spec?

I believe all their models have an A designation at the start of the season

Cool, I figured I must have missed it before. Just caught my eye this time around

Mercedes doesn't look too different than McLaren. I guess that's good?

A is always a designation for the first chassis of the new model, this is a Mclaren tradition

It looks way more developed. Especially the floor. But it’s possible McLaren’s floor will be very different come Barcelona.

It's obvious McLaren did show the real floor, they covered it up.

Okay, this is a bit reassuring. Concept is similar to the Mercedes.

Now, we don't know whether Mercedes will be good or not. But given it has been the benchmark for the last (almost) decade, it's a good reference point to have.

Much shorter nose on the Merc versus MCL & Ferrari?

Rear packaging McLaren looks very comparable to Merc- out matte orange seems to hide away some of the contours as well so I’m sure we have some similar detail.

Desperate to see our floor now and am surprised Merc showed theirs- I wonder if they’re pulling a stunt and have a real one lined up and are just throwing people off the scent?

I'm Pretty sure that's the initial spec floor they are running with as it's covered in sensors for the first test.

McLaren:

On the subject of chassis dynamics, you mentioned the changes that we can't see. Under the skin, is the MCL36 likewise very different to its predecessors?

Under the skin it’s pretty similar, other than the suspension. Suspension internals have been simplified. We don’t have inertial dampers anymore – that’s all been reimagined as something easier to police, easier to design and ultimately cheaper – we just have springs, dampers, anti-roll bars and so forth.

The mechanical layout has naturally changed as well, as we’re trying to complement the aerodynamic layout of the car. The gearbox, for example, sits right in the diffuser. A gearbox from last year, in terms of its geometry and construction, just wouldn’t match a ’22 car, and so we’ve had to redesign the casing to be much more sympathetic to aerodynamics than it has been in the past. What’s also new for ’22 is that this gearbox will be homologated. As a cost-saving measure, you’ll be stuck with the fundamental design of your gearbox for five years – so there’s been a lot of futureproofing put into the concept as well.

Interesting...

Well so far, my main concern for this car would be the performance of the new suspensions. McLaren is apparently the only car which has gone for this complete shift (unless Alpine has done the same).

It will either mess stuff up for them, do good stuff for them, or be neutral and do neither too good nor too bad. Let's hope it's not the first.

As they’ve never been able to compete on kinematics in the last few years, maybe having worked on this for nearly 2 years it’s the right way to go. Aero performance is king this season so maybe being brave might pay off handsomely. But like you I fear the unknown. At least they’re making a real stab at doing something different and behave as a front runner team. Can’t knock them for that!
