Mercedes W13

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Sam Collins thinking is that it might be quite challenging to solve for Mercedes (based on his assumption that the issue is a product of their car concept)
I've no idea who this Sam Collins is but it seems an unduly strong opinion to hold when not knowing what Merc themselves know. How can anyone with a fair mind come to that conclusion based on an assumption?

I would be pressing Sam Collins to explain exactly what part of the Merc concept leads him to his hypothesis than blindly taking his word as verbatim. If or when he can't substantiate his claim you'll know where to bin his conclusion.

As the problem started only after the new floor today, there was no issues yesterday.
I think its the new floor causing the issues.

no evidence from photos of the morning session that there was a different floor being run. Maybe tomorrow or George runs it this afternoon

The car did exhibit the same characteristics yesterday and it was reported.

My understanding from a source yesterday was that Mercedes was one of the few teams that was exhibiting 0 “porpoising.”

So will have to read back a few pages to see where that talk started.

I am sorry to Lawrence, but I choose to believe what amus has reported as they have the best record of being very reliable. According to that article, at least yesterday, it was Ferrari and McLaren with the more stable cars on track. And particularly today, Mercedes itself has been spotted to suffer from this problem (particularly on the main straight).

He is usually a good technical speaking head, but he doesn't seem to fully grasp what porpoising is and what needs to change to eliminate or minimize it.

The new floor might be producing more downforce which until the suspension is tuned properly may cause porpoising, but it does not necessarily mean that the floor itself is causing the porpoising. The tires are all new as well, and there are always ripples at end of straights, so the car will just need further tuning.

Lawrence was reporting what he was hearing from other teams in the paddock.

AMuS are excellent, but not infallible.

My interpretation of all this, it that the Mercedes was very stable around the corners, but suffered from porpoising at high speed down the straights.
