Key also mentioned they had different paths developed in parallel ready for the start of 2021 so it certainly wasn't one fixed design path locked in. Add to that what he, the team and Dan stated about his significant input and things definitely have changed alot and towards a car that combines that input taken from cars like the RBR. This helps give a different design philosophy away from the quirky handling McLaren one of previous years, which Key stated the wanted to get away from now to get a more consistent handling car.
My only point is that the team will follow whatever path makes the car the fastest possible, if that path suits Daniel’s style more, fantastic, if it doesn’t, so be it… The drivers always provide feedback, the fact that Carlos said that it was “weird” means that the handling characteristics of the MCL35M were known way before Daniel came on board and I’m sure both Carlos and Lando provided similar feedback back then, the difference is that both of them manage to drive around the issue.

If some want to think that Daniel is responsible for the MCL36 performance, is up to them… Just as I won’t blame him if the performance isn’t there, I won’t praise him if the car’s performance is great… He is supposed to drive the car as fast as the car can go… He is not an engineer, he isn’t a designer, as much what he can do is to tell them that it feels that the car does X, when he is doing A and does Y when he is doing B and how he would like those variables to feel, the team will try to make adjustments to make the car be as close as possible to what he wants, but it’s possible that it won’t be the case (like the 2021 season showed).
You're missing the point. Without Dan's input which Lando also agreed with the car wouldn't be what it is now. I'm not saying it's all his input of course not but it is significant. Lando and Carlos didn't have reference points from a race winning car like the RBR that Dan brings to the team. Your are underestimating how important that information and experience is . Mentioning 2021 is a moot point because Dan had very limited input into that car. Time will tell how good the car is and if it's the right design direction.
This is exactly what I’ve been trying to say, thank you for being so concise. 👍

McLaren boss Andreas Seidl points to the Ferrari motorhome when asked about the strongest car: "I see it a bit ahead at the moment. They really made a strong impression. And reliability also seems to fit."

The McLaren driver got his first opportunity behind the wheel of the team’s MCL36 on Thursday after team mate Lando Norris drove both sessions on the opening day. Ricciardo covered 126 laps, setting the third overall fastest time of the day.
Ricciardo says that he expected the heavily modified cars for the 2022 season would be more of a challenge to get to grips with than they proved.

“I was probably expecting a bit worse in the car or a bit more of a difficult car to drive,” Ricciardo said. “But so far it actually felt pretty balanced and there’s definitely grip. I think we see some cars already below the 1’20s, so there’s some pretty quick lap times around here. So yeah, quite fast early on.”

Having driven the most laps on the day of any driver other than Pierre Gasly, Ricciardo says he was pleased with the early reliability of the MCL36 over the first two testing days.

“I think with testing, the first thing you want to do is get laps in,” Ricciardo said. “So to do well over 100 laps on my first day was really good. So from reliability, [it was] nice.

“The one thing you want is laps. We’ve had both days over 100 laps, so we’re in a good position from that point of view of reliability and the more laps we do, the more things we can test and learn from the car. So I think we’re in a good place from that point of view.”

While Mercedes driver George Russell suggested that McLaren and Ferrari look strong in the early phase of testing, Ricciardo said he’s not focused on where the team end the test on the timesheets.

“It’s hard to quantify who’s ahead at the moment, for sure,” he said. “We seem to be up the pointy end of the times.

“I don’t think Mercedes, Red Bull have really done anything, showing any cards yet, so I don’t really look too much. Ferrari – I think they they look solid, they look consistently good.

“But I’m trying not to read too much into it yet. It’s still early and [we should] focus on ourselves. I think there’s definitely some good things I feel in the car and, as always, some things to work on. But I think we’ve started off with a good base.”

More commentary from Joylon Palmer complimenting the Mclaren and Ferrari.

The Mclaren is the only car not porpoising according to Joylon and it’s running closer to the ground than anyone else.

Does Gary Anderson hate McLaren or what? Every single team was mentioned but McLaren, even though compliments are coming left and right. https://the-race.com/formula-1/who-was- ... trackside/

Excellent point, however, they weren’t the only ones peddling this line of BS.

He’s not even a has been, he’s a never was! The best policy is to ignore him, he’s like a broken clock, sometimes he’s right but it’s only by accident.

To be fair, he does mention the McLaren favourably in The-race podcast.
