Is that the same Gary Anderson that was comparing the spec wheel deflectors on the McLaren and the Red Bull and commenting on how the teams had come up with unique solutions... for a spec part...

Mercedes added yellow on Hamilton's numbers to make it stand out more.
In recent days, the race number was edged in white.

It was VERY obvious that Russell was hugely sandbagging in his interview yesterday when he said that McL and Ferrari were ahead of Merc. With rumors saying Merc is going to show up with a vastly different car in Bahrain, I fully expect Merc to be contend for at least front row in Bahrain. The only question mark is engine reliability (through the season)

Don't see why that they just use the colours that the driver associates with themselves the most. So Lewis would have purple of some form and Russell could have another. Wouldn't even need to see the number and be able to recognise who is who. Is there something against the rules about it? I remember there was some changes about making them bigger or clearer but I can't remember.

Gives it a bit of Valentino Rossi flair.

All those changes in regulation for nothing at the end, if Mercedes get this 9title in a raw

So you think the rules where purely designed to hinder Merc?

They are trying to increase contrast, not reduce it. A dark purple and black would have very poor contrast!

If they get it, it's not necessarily bad for the sport and the regs. What's bad if it is not only one team ahead of the rest, but also a marginal or not a significant enough change to the improvement of racing. Imo, that's what will judge these regulations as a success or not. Because God do I wish for these exciting drivers given the opportunity to race hard and fair against each other, if these regs are able to give us that, F1 can have an even brighter future.

Definitely agree, just think an approach that they had with the 2017 and 2018 cars meant you never even had to look at their numbers. Like driver helmets, we only need to see the colour and we know who it is.

SilverArrow31 over at Autosport mentioned the blue for Russell and yellow for Hamilton is more likely to be a show of support for Ukraine. So that's a good point.

Not really, it was of course for closer racing, budget cap and less performance difference between teams.
But also, if we look at the past, big changes were always a bit to change the status quo / finish a domination, because fans are enthusiast when a "new team" win, with another driver and so on
