Solidworks flow simulation

Hello there,

Though im not an CFD scientist im quite interested in it. So i have got some questions, hoping you can help me out.

I have solidworks 2009 on my laptop here, and this version has flow simulation (was cosmos flow in the past). Great to have this tool on my PC for static simulations...

But unfortunately im more interested at the moment in dynamic simulations. The point is i would like to simulate the flow in a 2stroke cilinder (a simple but usefull simulation) So the piston must move for this. Is it possible to do a dynamic flow simulation in this program? Or is it just to basic for this?

I would love to have a better CFD-program but offcourse these are hard to find (for a hobby engineer )

I hope you can help me, and solidworks does the trick, but i have a bad feeling abput it [-o<

Well, I havent done it myself and I don´t really know if this works but under "boundary conditions" you can select "wall" under "type" and then assign movement to it, you can even assign a formula if it´s complicated movement

Solid works is sorta limited in that respect.. I have 2007 but it seems it's mostly a freeze frame type a thing.. I haven't got any indication of dynamic simultations from it. ??

well the thing is really this is the first version solidworks takes these programs in own hands. So i dont think a really good comparison can be made with previous versions.

I have now a really simple "practice" experiment for these things, Ill send it to you this week FOZ, when im on my other Computer again.

Its also very good possible im missing some commands to do this. Normally i work with autodesk inventor and this is all slightly different.

Tomislav, de boundary conditions you are talking about cant i see anywhere...

okay, where did you get that toolbar from?

These are all toolbars i can see which is possible. I installed the normal premium version...

Go to Tools>Add-ins and tick Solid Works Flow Simulation 2009 as an active add-in and make it active at start-up and than try to find the toolbar, if you can´t find it there you have another package installed

ah that must be it than, ill remove this version and will install another this week. Ill let it know when things are working! (probably with a next set of questions, but lets see about that later )

I am still skeptical of a piston Simulation.. I don't think Solid Works can do it.. So you guys have to prove me wrong...Be sure to post back.

well this or the next version autocad will be the last edition, i dont remember with what they will continue. So it seems unlikely to me they invest to make a cfd in that. Also the choice would be more logic to add this in inventor, but 2010 doesnt have this yet. Maybe they will put it in 2011, who knows... But i dont know all these details.

As for the solidworks im having now i need to install the floworks program, but i cant get it working yet (missing files etc) Though if i startup solidworks i can see the new toolbar before the program crashes. So at least i know its there, hope to get it working with the dvd i got, or else i would have to search another one

n smikle: i donnt know the possibilities with solidworks in this. Its a experiment for me as well. But its the only program possible to find (ANSYS is quite hard to find i can tell you) But the fact components can rotate during the simulation is a positive thing allready

Doubtful. If you're referring to the core AutoCAD product, I spent about a year working on 2008, and never saw any function like what you're talking about. That being said, I also happened to find it wretched at everything you try to do on it, it's 3D engine was clumsy, completely unintuitive, and a system resource hog. Maybe AutoCAD Inventor or Mechanical might have something like that...but I've spent time on Mechanical 2006 and never found it there. Mind you, it would be easy to overlook in the mess of menus spread all over AutoCAD's products

Autocad is great. I can operate the fastest in AutoCAD. It is great for what it was made to do. Use the Help file!

Ehh, it was worth a try. Just wanted to know to have some fun and practice using ACAD for college (Mech eng).
