Ferrari Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

The vast majority but not all of the F1 media articles about the 2022 FERRARI 066/7 power unit says that FERRARI have opted for a ‘split turbo’. But a few says/claim that FERRARI retained the turbine/supercharger architecture used previously. While all of said F1 media strives so as to be first out with such technical discoveries and be believed by their respective followers not a single one of them claims confirmation by FERRARI or by any one single member of FERRARI, although all or most claims or at least pretends insider information.

There are some similarities to their 2020 power unit. Note the dual runners feeding the inlet boxes, the same baffle joints.

''The Scuderia's engine showed great acceleration qualities out of the corners, enhancing the excellent traction of the F1-75, while not giving up maximum power values. Observers wonder how it is possible that the Ferrari power unit is efficient both below and above: there is not only one answer, but one of the innovative aspects concerns the intake system: inside the box there are ducts with variable geometry rather long and if you look upstream of the plenum you can see a sort of ... carbon "snake" that appeared for the first time on 066/7. These are composite pipes that are not part of the approved engine and that can be modified both in the design and in the length, to “tune” the 6-cylinder according to the characteristics of the track where the Ferrari goes to race. It should not be surprising, therefore, the readiness of the Cavallino unit which will have an adaptability to the different circuits of the world championship.

Before closing one last important note: several press outlets have indicated that the 066/7 is an engine converted to the separation of turbo from compressor, following a concept launched by Mercedes in 2014 and taken up over time first by Honda and now also by Renault. That's not true, Ferrari architecture has remained classic. Even if the choices adopted are innovative ...''

Now, that’s interesting. Adapting the PU-hardware according to track characteristics?

Also, once again motorsport specifically mentions that it’s not a split-turbo design.

That looks like some sort of intercooler? No frontal inlet face as it should be on compressor? But then where is the piping coming from conpressor? I'm confused :?

why those pipes are so long and simuous? could be a sort of compressor with inlet from the V vane of engine

That cookie tin is definietely the intercooler, just a different shape from last year's.

The compressor is either facing backwards OR it is at the back of the engine as before and the charge pipe is moulded into the lower part of the engine Vee.

Binotto said they had some innovative packaging going on but this PU seems to be one of the biggest mysteries of the season thus far.

No way to reach the 1100 pages (or whatever number is now) the Honda PU thread though :D

Yeah we need to come up with 700 pages of MGUH speculation quick. To that end:

In the image above this is normally where there intercooler has been the past few seasons. So has it changed shape or is this something else? If it's shaped like a gugelhupf that means the IC core sort of resembles a cylindrical air filter now?

Maybe the stories about them working with Reaction Engines should have been taken more literally. Edit - I guess that was Merc.

Alright that's 1/10th of a page, now you go.

That rumor was for Mercedes though wasn't it?

You are correct, I've mixed up engine threads. Regardless, though.

Further speculation, could it be a secondary VIM chamber?
