It's a fact that they have taller gears.

So for now they seem to mismatch their engine and gearbox ratio to get maximum out of the car. I highly doubt that they really made a mistake on that but instead I think they expected more power from the engine when they set this gear ratio. May be this prove that they haven't maximized the engine power somehow and we should have more to come, which is positive.

this also could explain the difference between qualy pace and race pace.

Or expected less weight and drag from the car.

Maybe this is exactly how they want it, I just don't understand why.

In Miami in Quali Alonso was

In 7th at 10.7K RPM 299KPH
in 8th at 11.7K RPM 339KPH

Which means he could probably get to 326KPH in 7th gear @ 11.7K RPM, if he had to and with Full boost of the from the MGU-K.

That's another thing we don't see in the traces. We don't see how long the MGU-K lasts and where it's being used, if not everywhere. Though it doesn't look like they're not using power where they others are. It would appear as a big difference in power.

I feel it's more of a final drive thing than the difference between the gears. Maybe that is the plan though, keep the RPMs below 12k on the new PU.

So far this weekend, it looks that Alpine seem to be preparing to run much less wing than everybody else. Which is something that they appear to doweekend in weekend out.

They're hitting 8th gear on the start finish straight. I have Alonso at 317 here but he actually tops out at 318KPH. They generally shift to 8th at around 300Kph. They had the top speed in FP2. They're probably not shifting to 8th on thier long runs, when they're heavy with fuel.
