Why are FP1 & FP2 so late today??

Usually in Europe they start earlier in the morning…
Because the Drivers Press Conferences are from this year on on Fryday morning.

Mercedes bouncing looks a lot better, Ferrari's isn't, although too early to say anything.

How would you install banking on the side of a hill?

The problem with Barcelona’s final corner is the proximity of the main stand and the end of the pit wall. It was very dangerous previously, check some onboards.
Unless it's changed for this season, there's no grandstand immediately on the last corner that could harm people. Last time I was there you can walk there, so better fencing will soon fix that issue. In zandvoort the fencing is much closer (immediately on the edge off the track).

It would be fantastic if they get rid of that horrible chicane, go back to the old layout but add a small banking to the final corner. It should increase speed by a decent margin and allow for a great first corner battle.
Why just a small banking, why not go full Zandvoort?
Even better!
The end of the main stand is directly in the firing line if you go off on the outside of the final corner. At 200mph it was much worse. Get it wrong on the inside and you have the end of the pit wall.

I know it’s FP1 and all the usual caveats apply (before people feel it necessary to point that out and ridiculing me for having an opinion)… I also note that Ferrari are currently 1-2 in the timings.

For me, I sense redbull are faster this weekend. Max obliterated the Ferrari’s on the hards, and got severely hampered on his soft run due to traffic.

I think Ferrari was doing aero tests on hards for both drivers, I was on Lec's onboard all session and they were doing stuff like T7 constant speed on 5th gear, testing out differential settings in different parts of the track and so on.

I feel the same, but it's very early days.
It does feel MB made a proper step as well, but overall I think it's just a bad weekend for predicting as teams have so much experience at this track and a lot of benchmarking is going on.
Regarding the major updates here and there; there is always a percentage of updates that just don't work as expected IRL. But like I said, I don't feel anybody really went deep this session.

Hamilton fastest on those mini long runs on the softs but his tires were a couple laps younger than the rest!

Is it though?

RB were very pointed about their rivalry with Mercedes, blaming them for the bad blood. Yet, here we are with complaints and pretty puerile acts against a team that has absolutely no threat to them.

I don't totally agree. The Ferraris looked quicker on end of practice long run, at least from what I saw on the timing app.

FP2 will shake things out a little more but there's no way to draw a definite conclusion yet.
