This telemetry makes it very clear to see how Ferrari fixed tyre deg, they added a bunch of downforce overnight.

* LEC was 6kph down on main straight to RUS (318k v 324k), although VER and SAI are just 1kph apart. LEC also great through T1-2 which shows the higher downforce. SAI sadly made a mistake there.
* T5-6-7-8 LEC has monster traction, just a totally different level
* T9 is interesting, both SAI and RUS are really fast while LEC and VER are slow, this is kind of opposite than previews FP sessions, so maybe LEC going slower not to overcook tyres there.
* In S3 you can really see Ferrari stability under braking that allows LEC to get as fast as he can right before the corner and on the finish straight again Ferrari with that 200-280kph acceleration advantage

As I shared earlier race sim in FP3 show that Ferrari bridged the gap in tyre deg, thanks to the added downforce. I don't know what VER could have done here, S3 from RedBull, especially T11 has been a bit slower but VER lap was very solid, no mistakes, despite the lower DF than Ferrari he clearly does better than LEC in T9 but it's just slower in T6-7-8-9 and he would cook the tyres for S3 if he tried to go even faster there.

Merc is very close, slow corners are really where they lose, especially that last chicane, but they are a threat.

Will be an interesting race, Ferrari may have solved big tyre deg, but maybe not enough to keep RB behind, we'll see tomorrow.
Yes. Let’s not forget that in the FP2 long runs, Leclerc was running the old, lower downforce, rear wing. I think I’m correct in saying that Sainz was already running the high downforce wing and he was already faster than Perez on long runs in the soft tyre. Seems like both cars have now gone in that higher downforce direction and you can see they’re keeping tyres alive in S3 which is a good sign.

People talk about Charles’ best quali laps - and this was a great one, no doubt - but I think they also sleep in some of his 2019 quali performances because the car had so much power. He himself mentioned Singapore 2019 as one of his best, but there are also places like Spa and Russia 2019 where he annihilated Seb in the other car by something like 7 tenths. Tl:dr he’s always been a quali beast.

Are we convinced that it was just the DRS flap on Max's car?

On the Sky coverage it sounded like the power drop was in T3, so how could that be the DRS flap?

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

It depends whether he’s felt the speed loss by top speed delta or a general feel through driving the car?

he just gave up the lap when realized he was without DRS on the main straight.

His first thought was lack of power due to missing top speed since the DRS light was on but not really active.

Ah OK. So the footage was of the wrong part of his lap. Makes sense now.

Does RB have a spare wing of the same spec if they can't repair the actuator?

Russell and hamilton are on different setups almost certainly. Russell is always faster on the straights by 3-5 kmh and always a tenth or two up in S1.

So verstappen had another drs failure. It definitely wasn't a driver error as you can see left hand side red light is turned on on his steering wheel, so the system thinks is open, but it wasn't. Unlikely he had enough for leclerc but probably could be closer somewhat.
Hamilton always plays the longer game. If preserving tyres means losing speed, he will accept that if he believes it will come to him in the race.
<personal stuff deleted>
Did you watch any of the post Qualli interviews? The drivers and Toto said they have a better race car than a qualifying car. Qualli defines your starting position, the race defines your finishing position.
Hamilton (and Russell) knows he is not going to get the best out of the car in single laps, so why destroy resources for no gain. Wait until the race and benefit from a couple more laps between pitstops. Who know, there may be a VSC and you get a cheep one while others trundle around on 3 lap old tyres.
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

Sainz drank water before he went to the FIA dude to weigh him, isn't that technically grounds for disqualification?

Well they have a drink in the car, so I can't see how it would be.

Of course, in the end the weight of driver and car together is taken, so whether drink is in the car, or drunk by the driver and in him is irrelevant; though here Sainz drank from another bottle (or did he just lift it and think better of it, forgot).

based on my own notes:

Image

(tyre age in brackets, was too lazy to add it for the softs. Should basically be "3" for almost all used sets anyway)

So McLaren. Alpha Tauri, Aston Martin and Haas could be in a bit of trouble if it really turns out to be a two-stopper. Leclerc saved a fresh set of softs
