FANGIO

Post

For comparison, for reverence, for enjoyment, for amazement:

Reading a biography about Fangio the thing that impressed me was the improvisation to both build cars and fix them to finish in his early South American races. Those skills are alluded to in this video where his Alfa broke a track rod and hence only had steering on one wheel, he continued and still averaged over 100MPH

The Life Behind the Legend

And the story about him having to do a driving test when he was elderly to keep his licence and he challenged the tester to a race (this is going by foggy memory so....)
To wit:
He also challenged a law in 1994 in Buenos Aires that denied driving licences to those over eighty years old. He challenged the Traffic Bureau personnel to a race between Buenos Aires and Mar del Plate – a two hundred and fifty mile distance – in two hours or less. Following this race, an exception to the law was made and Fangio got his driver’s licence back.
