This could be a stupid question - so don't shout at me!

Wouldn't 'outisde' air being forced into the diffuser increase the mass volume through it and help pull more air through?

- dont shout

I think thats one of the main points about it. Mass air flow.

Mass volume? Now I am confused. These are two quantities that are related but different. Could you reword your question?

What i meant was getting the most amount of air through at the back of the car.

but yes, i was mixing my terms up a bit!

Brawn’s sidepods are really very sculpted . The following comparison reveals how . Notice how boxy are BMW sidepods whick uses KERS and the KER system requires extra cooling .

Here's my assessment of the situation. By conservation of momentum of a single-inlet, single-outlet system:

This is the additional thrust provided by the velocity change of air through the diffuser. Increasing mass flow rate may or may not impact the amount of thrust generated by the diffuser.

Assuming constant mass flow rate, yes. But it's not that simple in the real world.

Any idea why Jenson used the rear rim shields in China and Bahrain, but Reubens did not at either race?

Both Button and Barrichello had their rear wheel rim shields removed in China . Also in Bahrain the sheilds were refitted back in both cars .

I believe the reason why the shields were removed during Sunday race in China was the wet race conditions . Rain neutralized any aerodynamic gain coming out of them and consequently there was no need to carry them as a burden .

So they took the rear shields off for a stint, and then put them back on?

I have both races downloaded, but casually re-watch them while doing some other stuff. I was pretty sure that I saw that Reubens did not have them for either race, but Jenson did... But them your pic comparison shows Jenson in the wet without them in China.

maybe I'll spend some time checking it out.
