Considering the results of Verstappen vs Leclerc have been pretty similar to this thus far, I'm not sure of that. Might be some bias in your assessment.
Regardless, the approach he took didn't look off to me.

With the straight line advantage of Red Bull, Max would have caught Sainz by lap 60. There was a .4 -.5 per lap gain around lap 50 so Sainz wouldn’t have a chance because he wasn’t going to stop again without the safety car. Honda power beating out a Ferrari with DRS is quite ominous. However if it was Leclerc in 2nd then he might have caught him after the SC.
according to Mercedes you needed to be 0.6s faster to have a chance to overtake. And it looked more like more than that in most cases. Sure, maybe Sainz would have struggled on the old tyres in the end, but I'd say it would have been completely open at least.hkbruin wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 22:11With the straight line advantage of Red Bull, Max would have caught Sainz by lap 60. One if the rare times when Alonso's remarkable race-reading ability didn't not show up.Schuttelberg wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 22:23Vettel, Alonso & Russel's strategies seemed more for the benefit of their team mates than them!
I think Russell could have won today if he didn't box immediately after Hamilton. He had 10 laps fresher hard's and would have got a free stop under the SC to put on a new set of M.

They pitted him as he wasn't drastically quicker than lewis with older hard tyres so there wasnt a differential to leave him out as he would of been eaten up by people who pitted (of course nobody knew about the other SC later). Also, with the laptimes it was clear lewis had the pace over george in this race. on similar age tyres (lewis 1 lap older), lewis dropped george 5 seconds+ in 10 laps. in the middle stint lewis had older tyres and was only losing a 1-3 tenths per lap and sometimes doing faster lap so it was a clear indication George didnt have the pace to leave out as he wasn't massively fast to leave him out.Schuttelberg wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 22:23Vettel, Alonso & Russel's strategies seemed more for the benefit of their team mates than them!

I think Ferrari actually had a decent strategy this weekend. Given the slow stop for Lec with the rear jack man being a bit eager which put him a little out of position. Capitalised on the virtual safety car stop.
