What on Earth were the old ones made of? Lead? Probably flex even more than they already do

Unless they had ballast in them at the mid tip?

Judging the way that Hamilton's front wing survived Saudi Arabia last year, it's likely that the front wings are being "overdesigned" to help them survive contact a bit more.

However, since we know that Merc have had an issue being a bit overweight, they probably decided they need to lighten things up a bit at the expense of integrity.

The wing would include nose cone. I suspect a new design.
For Sure!!

I guess you heard about the new Red Bull hypercar. Newey is going to be in charge of that project.

https://www.gpfans.com/en/f1-news/85902 ... ian-newey/

The easy way out...they accidentaly did it with the Aston Martin Valkyrie, it worked for them and now all the innovative research is going to be charged under the "other hypercar project". No one will be able to check what is transferred between the two projects.

I expect all teams able to pull off something like this to do it. Mercedes clearly lost the chance with the Mercedes-AMG One, but there can be an upgraded version with new floor etc.
I really do hope they manage to do it as well, because otherwise the gap is simply going to turn huge...

Front wings, rear wings, and floor? That's going to eat into the budget quite a bit.
True, but Merc actually hasn't introduced as many new parts as some of the other teams around them have (e.g., Aston, Alpine).

Also, Merc drivers have done well to avoid needless crashes and therefore saved quite a bit of money on having to manufacture extra bits.
Actually they have. Most however have not been successful which means the money has been a waste.
I don't believe any data is ever classed as a waste of money, they may have tried something but gone too far, or even found it to not work as it should. As long as you understand what is happening then no change is a waste. Value for money is another matter....

I do feel other teams think Mercedes could be close this weekend and in France. The car showed good race pace in Canada on a track than many thought would go against the car due to its inherent issues. Once Mercedes genuinely understand this car and have the right parts to set it up as they want then they will be right up there.

The question is, when did/do Mercedes understand this car. If it was 6 weeks ago, the new parts could arrive this week, if they still don't quite have a grasp on all aspects then it could be another 2 months....

I wonder if that is a mistake in the units used. 4-5kg seems much vs 4-5lbs.

The teams don't work in lbs, they work in metric / SI Units.

The teams don't, but I don't know who that person that tweeted it was or her sources. Her sources could be using pounds while she was thinking in metric.

If her sources are in the US, perhaps. Otherwise, it'd be kg all the way.

The "front wing" is the entire front wing plus the whole nose structure which includes the front crash structure, etc. There's quite a lot of metal in all of that, don't forget, that might be lightened or even replaced with a CF or other lighter material. Changing in the shape of the aero elements will also change the amount of material in the wing.

Lots of little bits here and there will start to add up.

Just consider the weight of a LTR of resin. If what was 3 separate parts are now 'cast' as one it could easily be that

Exactly. Easy to find mass when you start looking for it.
