Btw I am disappointed McLaren did not gamble with going onto softs. There were 17 laps for Lando and Ricciardo could have told them how the softs feel.

What could Lando do more with the softs anyway. He is already at the best achievable position for today.

edit: we pitting him on the second safety car lap, and we lost to nando, and we know that alpine is a rocket ship on the straights.

My point is that there is little reason to play it safe - it's not like it's ground breaking if they finish P4 or P5.

I would have put him on Softs and saw what happens. Ocon did 22 laps on Softs from the start, going 17 on an empty tank should be easy.

What a huge --- up from the team to not pit Norris for softs under safety car! Alonso did stop for softs and Norris will have a less than likely chance to hold him off.

Edit: they pitted him a lap later with the result of losing the place to Alonso anyway. He will have a chance to fight him now, though

Team plays it too safe too often. We are not fighting for wins so we need to gamble a little bit. Doing what everyone else does will only guarantee a midfield position. If they switched to softs on their scheduled pitstop, he may have been in position to jump ahead or have tire advantage against non pitting cars.

I am guessing they thought Alonso would get through with the softs if Lando kept the hards. Otherwise doesn't make sense to lose track position like this.
