The road cars that used Formula 1-derived engines

Post

Road cars are seldom to use Formula 1 engines due to car development costs too high. Here's the example:

Any additions?

The 1995-97 Ferrari F50 engine was described as being based on the F1 V12 unit of 1990, albeit with a larger capacity (4.7L up from 3.5L).

Legend has it that the engine used in the Hillman Imp was based on the Coventry Climax engine used in a large number of ‘garagistes’ F1 cars.
The really interesting thing is that the engine (as used in F1) was originally developed from a water-pump engine.

the huge example from history is of course Ferrari
their 'Colombo' V12 was used S/C & NA in the first F1 and was the backbone of their road car production till the 80s
their 'Lampredi' V12 was used NA in the first F1 and was at the front of their road car production till the 70s
their WDC winning F1 2.5 litre Dino V6 was used in their 'everyman's' road car the Dino (and Fiat's Dino etc cast in iron)
(iirc Googling Dante Giacosa will source a free download of his book)

Nice thing indeed, but not a road car so technically that's off topic.

completely otoh
wasn't the Renault F1 turbo a version of a 'free design rules' F2 engine ? - not a 'stock-block rules' F2 engine ?

It's amusing to remember that engines have gone both ways in F1 - the BMW M12 used by Brabham and others was based on the block of the M10 road car engine, for example.

50,000 km? A lot of road driven toys don't see that mileage in 20 years.
