The answer to "why was Leclerc's lap in Q1 not deleted?" is probably that the white line in that particular corner is just ... fat

The image is from Q3

This is Sainz just ahead of LEC in Q1

This is parabolica, wider white line once the curb starts.

The low quality screenshot obviously hides this, but from every camera angle it's visible that there is no way to distinguish between the white line and the trackside white of the curb, which leads me to believe that the line there is everything up to the red/green - meaning he was very very likely still on the line.

Thanks for the nice analysis, as always.

Seems like even with a normal thin white line Charles would have been inside. Does not even look close, to be honest.

Oh that was just a screenshot to show how thick the line is, this is the furthest he got out on his final flyer in Q3

Image

With a line as thin as it is before and after the curb he might have been off, but it's clear that he has the entire front tyre still on the line, even the inside shoulder.

This is the best quality i could get of the Q1 situation
Image

It's closer than Q3 but one can kinda see where the red/green stuff is and that it's still fine.

Wonder what will be the strategy today. I expect Hamilton, Ocon and Sainz to start on H hoping for a SC.
I think Leclerc might try M-S strategy as he got track position over Verstappen.
Alonso might start on M in order to extend.
Verstappen, Perez and the McL will surely start on S in order to get the best start and get track position.
Monza punishes you too much with hards. But if the safety car comes after the first pitstop window it is a blessing.

Could you not argue that there is also a white line on the outside of the curb

Its even difficult to get 4 wheels over that white line he would be in the gravel by then

Video images that have gone viral show some Ferrari fans making a threatening statement in the Monza stands.
The images show how several men threaten fans of Max Verstappen. The Verstappen fans are forced to remove on their Red Bull caps.
There are also messages of chants in the direction of Verstappen. It is not yet clear whether any action has been taken against the group of misbehaving fans.
.
No no these are Italian Ferrari fans so it's passion!

Of course, but common sense kinda says that the white line is on the very edge of the track - on some tracks like Spa the curbs have no white at all so it's easy, but on every track with white/red/x curbs the line between those alternating colours and all white is where the edge of the line is defined, i'm relatively sure that the line they painted there is slimmer, that can be seen at the exit of T10/ Variante Ascari for example:
Image
There is a clearly visible distinction between curb and line - what they used to judge off tracks is anyone's guess.
Elsewhere there is no extra white on the inside of the curb
Image

But they have no way to enforce anything if there is no visible difference between the all white inside part of the curb and the line, that is the limit of the purely visual system they use, trying to guess what is and what isn't on the line anymore would lead to completely arbitrary decisions.

That the best camera to judge it produced such images towards the end of the session also did not help Image

I think LEC has to start on Softs. He needs to pull away as quick as possible to keep George out of his DRS, and build as much distance he can between him and Max until Max cuts through the crowd.
George is not going to be a thread for Charles.
Yeah, he will do a simple soft-hard and that's probably it. Ver will probably go med-hard. Russell has no zero chance against leclerc. Lec can probably outrun him at half throttle.

Seems like Verstappen starts with softs. Interesting if they can manage a soft-medium

The tyres on at the moment aren't his starting tyres. They're a used set of softs just to go to the grid with. It's when they take the blankets off just before the formation lap that we know what they are really starting on. Regardless, it's expected Max will start on softs. Pirelli says Soft-> Hard and Soft->Medium are possible and RB seems to have the most downforce of any car this weekend so they might be able to make the latter work well

Chances of a clean lap 1?

If tradition anything to go by...a Mercedes will have contact with someone at some point.
Mess with the Bull - you get the horns.

Lewis is starting near Sainz and KMag again, so it doesn't bode especially well

I think more df gives it's owner on throttle earlier or harder compared to one who has low df.
normally this should be the case, but traction out of slow corners is usually the biggest strength of the Ferrari. So even the fact that Red Bull is expected to improve, doesn't necessarily mean that they are better
yes traction out there were their strength but not all the time. for example at monaco sainz could not attack to perez because of too much wear at rear tyres

Dont forget George having his eyes on P1 at the first corner.
