3D Printed 2010-2014 F1 Gearbox Model

Long time lurker on the forums here decided to finally share the project I have going on that you all may find interesting. I hope I picked the appropriate forum area. I've always been fascinated with F1's gearboxes which have more often than not been shrouded in a lot of secrecy. Last year I finally found more pics of the XTRAC P1044 gearbox, variations of which were used in F1 from 2010-2014, and upon seeing them I knew I had to create my own working model of an F1 transmission.

My model is far from accurate, more of a homage to several different variations of the gearboxes created by each team. There are a lot of places where I had to make some design compromises for cost and 3D printability. Also some of the parts I had to come up with entirely on my own given the lack of available information even for 6+ year old F1 gearboxes. Let me know if you have any good pics of one of these gearboxes disassembled, I'm always interested in learning everything I can about them.

If you’re interested in seamless gearbox solutions, Honda has a quite interesting one on their MotoGP bikes, where there are two sets of dogrings with teeth caching the next gear. Very complicated but beautiful in operation.

Those Honda gearboxes are awesome, I definitely have that on my list. I found a paper that two grad students in japan wrote about the seamless Honda F1 gearbox that had quite a lot of detail on how it worked. I've also seen some designs where the dogs are inside the shaft and there are no sliders so the gears like 1mm apart. I wish I could find some information on what the latest F1 gearboxes were using.

I read somewhere that the blue and red “teeth” are actually on the shaft itself inside the cog, making the GB super compact, perfect for MotoGP.

‘The blue and red teeth’. The blue and red teeth are ratchet pawls and they are not in-between the gears. In fact the gears are side by side with no slider or anything in-between. No dogs, no shift-forks, no shift barrel. Each to-be ‘engaged’ gear has 2 ratchets inside-it, each ratchet has 2 pawls, one of the ratchet pawl set ratchets in the opposed way to the other. The pawls are locked and unlocked by a spring loaded ball, which in turn is pushed into action by the selector shaft inside the main shaft. The selector shaft have idents which corresponding spring loaded detents detent’s falls into. The 2 ratcheting set-up and their pawls locking system permits gear ratio engagement as well as free-wheeling as well as engine braking.

I also very interested with gearboxs. Here a gearbox development document from honda. By reading this file I understand most of it working principles. I just am not sure about how they keep two gears engaged until lower gear disengage when shifting up (or vise verse )
I would like to have this kind of gb at my car.

I worked at Xtrac for 7 years and never fully got my head around the IGS system
Great job on the 1044 CAD model! Xtrac have a gear cluster from a 1044 gearbox on display in their reception which they often take to trade shows. So if you want to have a closer look at one in real life, take a trip down to the Autosport show on one of the trade days.
