In defence of Stroll. In FP1.. he jumped into a new car, with no previous testing, with a half broken wrist and was 6th quickest… fair play….

This may sound ridiculous to say out loud and may not age very well, but I wonder if Lance is rushing back because he genuinely thinks this car might be in a title fight and can’t afford to give away points from the table?

Long way to go and a curious grid today, but the car looked really nice to drive and hopefully bodes well for long run pace.

I don't think you are being ridiculous. I think it is exactly why he is rushing back. I've written before that I can't see this ending well. Alonso driving with a broken hand is different. With how shunt prone Lance is, I fear he will end up causing more damage either to himself or another driver.

The deisgn direction of this car is very clear! And Dan made his warning shots when he made that full end-plated rear wing last year!

These will be Alonso's swansong years. I've heard he will do 2 years and then that's it. Cherish it.

I wonder if AM will go after Norris for a 2025 seat. British driver driving for a british auto manufacturer.

A few more comments

1) Lance's pace without any testing and sore wrist should frighten people for one of two reasons:
a) the car is that good
b) Alonso still holding back

2) Aston Martin are in an unexpected position regulations wise. Red Bull only every accounted for the WT deficit to their nearest rivals (Ferrari and Mercedes). From that point of view, the WT restriction may be small if they don't waste any time. The problem is never in RB's wildest dreams did they imagine that the P7 WCC car, would start the season on near equal footing, while having overwhelmingly more WT time:

This makes AMR dangerous not just in Bahrain, but for the in-season development race. AMR will have nearly 40% more throughput in their windtunnel than RB, led by Dan Fallow. As good as the RB aero group is, the odds are not great beating a team led by someone like Dan Fallows with both hands tied behind your back. I expect AMR will get even closer to Red Bull over the season.
I echo your feelings after watching stroll this fast i am convinced alonso has close to second in pocket. If aston is close to redbull then bad news. Perez and verstappen fight will come to centre and alonso can go for killing.

He was on a Spanish show saying he could maybe do 3 or 4, so I don't know.

While you could be right, is that a later confirmation? i didn't hear about a 3rd year. The confirmation I have came from last summer.

Quoted by AS, Alonso said: “The plan was to come back to Formula 1.

“Those challenges were very enriching both personally and professionally. The challenge was to get back to the top, and I feel good. Now I have signed for two more years with another team.

Of course the Aston Martin actually being competitive will change his math considerably

Jeez give stroll a break, If this was Lewis or max everyone would be saying what a true athlete they are and that's why they the best etc. Were people asking for Kubica to be pulled from the grid after his accident surely he was more compromised than stroll ? I cant remember but doubt it

I doubt he is going through all that pain for a few points they must truly believe that car can fight with the top 3 guess we will find out later today,
