Yup, if you don't, you can expect crap, or even a bird's nest inside.

The engine and exhaust are separated by a cover. The exhaust system is incredibly hot when working. The shielding is there to protect components from the heat.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.

I wonder what the material is and how is it attached, it looks pretty seamless and not much in the way of fastening...

if you open the Hi-res pic
http://premium.f1-live.com/f1/photos-hi ... oa_616.jpg
you can see several mounting points, fasteners, seams and even access ports.

I think it is part of the race setup

What's with the checkerboard pattern on the intake? I thought CF had a weave patter to it?

Different weave. The toyota rear wing and many floors have this same weave.

from my past research, the checkered carbon fiber is a simple cosmetic preference. it looks more appealing and is gaining popularity(I think the usual "carbon fiber" pattern is too common now). Suppliers are probably pumping up their production of such a weave pattern and therefore its price is now almost identical to the "twill" weave per weight. Also the shape of the mold can direct what weave to use. Some are not suitable for complex shapes with lots of curves and folds because the threads will lose their tightness which is vital for parts that will see high stress loads.

the red bull and STR cars use this checkered weave extensively on the outside... it looks sweet 8)
