+1 This idea.

Real-time penalty for exceeding the limits of the track.
Real time punishment is especially important for the races. While some may think this situation where drivers simply have their lap deleted in qualy is sufficient, drivers are rarely facing consequences for exceeding track limits in races. They get a few warnings before they get a "black flag", but what if a driver waits until the last lap to break the track limits in order to gain an extra tenth to stay just out of the DRS gap? Should a race be decided like this?

it would make more sense for track limits to always slow the driver down so that they are punished when they make mistakes and that they cannot strategically "use their strikes" without consequence.
How about two meters of grass?
Yes. Suzuka is a good example of what a circuit should look like. There is no incentive to exceed the track limits anywhere at Suzuka. The kerbing, grass, gravel, and gradients at the edge of the track punish you for going wide.

I had this similar discussion sometime back with another poster, who thought it's a bad idea and run off is a good one as we don't want to see cars getting damaged and all that stuff. Driver mentality is simple, if there is a piece of tarmac, then use it to gain performance. If it's grass or gravel, stay out of it. Nothing else matters and they keep complaining about track limit penalties. So better have gravel or grass that automatically punishes excursions.

problem is a lot of tracks today get used by bikes as well. If you don't know gravel & sand, can rag doll a rider.

Haha! yeah, not really high tech... but they still need to install those, wire everything in, set up the software to read read and analyze the data, all the testing involved...
Could be stand alone with only a low voltage power supply. No computers needed, no microelectronics aside from LEDs. Botts' dots that light up, ribbon cable, call it done. 'bout as quick as painting the line itself.

But almost every circuit where bikes race, have gravel traps next to the track without run off. In fact you can argue that gravel traps slows the bikes faster than run offs. In the example you have posted, imagine if it was just tarmac, the bike would have gone even faster! Far more dangerous.

So every track should be like Paul Ricard because of motorcycles. Exciting. :P

Kerbs, followed by a strip of grass, and followed by the tarmac would be sufficient to satisfy the needs of both categories. There's nothing complicated about this. Drivers would lose time going off track.

In Spielberg near Knittelfeld it will rain in the morning and the temperature will be 16°C. Furthermore, from midday until the evening dense clouds prevail, but it remains dry and the temperatures are between 16 and 18 degrees. At night, visibility is limited by fog with lows of 12°C. Gusts can reach speeds between 7 and 13 km/h.

Looks to be drying up and remaining dry. Should land at the track around 10am so should have a update then.

Tbh, I’d prefer rain today, just to mix it up. If it’s dry, we get a pretty solid insight into what will unfold on Sunday.

Like, Baku, today just feels like a sideshow for a measly amount of points.

Love the enforcement of track limits. I think it’s great they enforce the rules. What a concept!

They make NFL, soccer, and basketball players stay within the lines to the mm because thems the rules. Drivers are paid exorbitant amounts of money to drive these cars within the lines. That’s the job. Can’t do your job? (Checo), go pound sand. Don’t like it? Go cry to mommy.

It’s the drivers job to drive within the track lines just like it’s a wide out’s job to catch the ball within the field lines. The end. Have a nice day.

That said...

GET SOME NORRIS!!
Looks like the Macca updates worked well here! Good sign of what’s to come. This is exactly what we need...A TIGHT upper field including Macca.

It’s shameful how badly Checo is squandering his opportunity. There really is no excuse for what he’s doing. It seems the car and pressure just might be over his head. Shame he can’t seem to navigate the pressure.

Sainz has no new softs due to having to burn an extra set whilst Lando does. Could make for an interesting battle for 3rd in SQ3 should it be a dry session

You’d still imagine (if no issues), RB 1-2, then Leclerc. Norris around 4th, with Sainz. AM fighting with Merc, and Russell might do Hamilton today with that extra set, like he did in SQ3 Baku. Rest all pretty much the same as yesterday, if it’s dry.

Yeah, definitely, with the current sprint setup rain during the sprint seems pretty much ideal, makes it at least a bit interesting (and a test of driver skill I guess) and doesn't spoil the race too much

Red Bull and Ferrari were within half a tenth yesterday, so I really can't see why it should be a Red Bull 1-2. And now it's gonna be wet anyway. It's still raining, it's cold, and this starts in less than two hours.

F3 was in the rain, by the end of the race the rain seemed gone (track still wet).
