Is it possible Alpine knew how good he is and were still fooling around? He's been in their SIM, driven their older machinery, they must have had a heap of data..... and they still let him slip through their fingers.

They did know, why they wanted him at Williams for a year, and keep Alonso.

Drove a better lap . Equally Oscar has seemed to have a slight edge over Lando this weekend

Both McLaren’s lost most of the time to Verstappen in the final chicane, Piastri was actually 0.18 faster than Verstappen by the time they reached the last braking point, while Lando was 0.09… The low speed weakness (against the RBR) is still there

Don’t know why Al-peen thought it would be cute to leave Oscar on the sidelines for ‘22 then shop him to Williams. Don’t they understand talent spotting, it was flaming obvious his was a special talent as many of us had anticipated.

Lando mentioned that he had some kind of hussle from Perez so I think he might have lost something there.

The 3 tenths are found in Bruxelles (1 corner)… The rest of the lap they are pretty even, with Lando having an slight edge in the first sector

You’ve answered your own question… They don’t understand talent spotting… In my opinion, it was simply Ego, they think of themselves as a big team and therefore they thought that Piastri had nowhere else to go (reality is, that if Daniel wouldn’t have underperformed as he did, Piastri wouldn’t have had the McLaren chance)… The whole saga, with delays to put a contract in front of him (which open the door for McLaren) and the attitude towards Alonso (more or less calling him old and wanting him on a 1 year contract) talks about a team with a very short team strategy driven by a few egos, instead of one with a long term plan.

He just seemed to have a couple of hundredths here and there, 0.3 over a long and tricky lap like this isn’t much. The balance between downforce and top speed at this track is well documented and could be part of this teammate comparison.

Now comes managing the egos of two bright young stars. Some say introducing an “upstart” young talent can destabilise the incumbent ad good as he (Norris) is. I think Oscar’s humble attitude may go some way to keeping Lando in a happy place. He’s already said before that Oscar is driving him to greater heights.
