Alonso is carrying the whole team on his back
I wonder what excuse the team can publicly provide for Lance today...

Probably that when he was knocked out, he was only 2 tenths off Alonso in Q1. So he was closer to Alo than usual but simply not enough this time

Alonso could have saved a set of new tires and done the time on used one

Track characteristics similar to Barcelona. AM struggled in Spain and similar story here in Japan.

Impressed with progress by Mclaren and Alfa Tauri.

Fernando still is the only driver who has been in every Q3 despite the drop in competitiveness, great job

Alonso's Q3 time this year (1.30.560) is slower than Vettel's Q3 time from last season (1.30.554)

Baffles me, how have they made the car faster start of the season, yet this upgraded and modified one is slower than the end of 2022 car.

I bet the Bahrain spec would be faster than this current one.
Someone said at the beginning of the season that the car looks to complicated to develop.
Well, this looks like it might be that.

i think that the FIA destroyed this car with those tyre spec changes and flexi wings regulations

Has any F1 team in recent past fall from '2nd' fastest at the start of the season to '6th or 7th' fastest by mid season (depending on circuit)?
Even if we say, the circuit layouts at the starting of the season doesn't really represent entire season still its a steep decline. I don't remember any team fallen so sharp so fast. There is something fundamentally wrong with their development strategy.
6th/7th fastest is an exaggeration, it has never been that bad. The gaps between the teams apart from Red Bull are extremely close this year which means a few tenths can make you climb many places at once and respectively also fall many places, it's a very big midfield with only one top car.

We have no idea what went on and what was done wrong if anything. I'm of the opinion the team is simply not ready yet rather than something being done especially wrong, and we should be patient
6th fastest is not an exaggeration but a reality .With this rate ,won’t be surprised if AM slide to 7th soon.
Technical dept has no clue what’s going on.It’s a free fall.

AT qualified ahead but likely have worse pace. Regardless it's true that the car is in free fall at the moment, but Id still advise patience, they're not oblivious to what everyone is seeing and I'm sure there's enough pressure inside the team already.

As to why updates are taking so long to arrive, no clue... Maybe it could be the technical directive but no proof of that yet though. Qatar is in two weeks and Austin in 4 weeks, if they were real about developing until the end (there's always the possibility they weren't) surely something should arrive by Austin at the very least and with a bit of luck it's a decent update package.

Going backward....Wind tunnel issues, budget issues, or Mercedes sabotage?

It's not baffling. It was the FIA. The front wing changes killed them.
