What a mess

T1 and T19.
Still the car had pace for pole at a track where the car was compromised by bumps which should bode well for the race.
The car still has loads of understeer and struggle in T1, and T13 on almost every single lap. I don't see the race nearly so straightforward. Sunday is also expected to be quite a bit cooler so will have even more understeer.
Understeer should be nice for the race with the issues on rear tyre thermal degradation that there is every year at COTA

It reminds me a lot of Hungary. Max has to overtake a lot of cars but if he does some nice moves on lap 1 a win is within reach

Worth mentioning by sticking to track limits pole wasnt on the cards after that turn 1 excursion, leclerc left loads of time in T19 just to stay on track, so if Ver would do the same then he'd lose some time in doing so.
Still would be P2 instead of P6 with all fast cars ahead... at least the race will be fun.

At least there are 2 DRS zones here.

There doesn't seem to be much of an advantage. +3 km/h on the Mercs. Down 3km/h on the Ferraris. Identical to the Mclarens.

Mclaren and Ferrari look like they have medium downforce. Mercedes with high.

Ver does not seem concerned about Sunday.

Number are in and RB must be playing the tyre longevity game, otherwise this downforce setup makes no sense. horrendously slow on straights. If anyone gets even a sniff on them with DRS they're toast and I predict perez might even go backwards during the race.

losing 3 tenths from T15 to T19, wtf even is this lol

That T15 to T19 makes zero sense whatsoever

Last year Ver ran the medium downforce setup and won the race even with a slow pit stop.

Last year Ver ran the medium downforce setup and won the race. The high downforce cars got massacred.
hamilton is similarly slow, i wonder how that will work for him. norris is sitting somewhere in the middle which i think is the best compromise, I put him as the biggest threat on sunday.

Verstappen even drops what looks like a tenth to Hamilton in T15-T19

If Ver completed his lap, he'd have been 2-3 tenths slower than last year.

2022 vs 2023:

So they just got slower on the straights without much gain in the corners.

any idea what he really said in that interview? Surely not "the adjustments we made from practice 1 to qualifying were not interesting"?!

Could be the reason why Perez almost had the same q time as Verstappen. Could be that they want Perez to be better in the last races so they have tuned the car to be more suitable to his driving style

He means there was not any remarkable set for qualifying. It was a conservative setup for the race. Could explain why the other cars were shoulder to shoulder with RedBull in qualifying trim.
