Mercedes W14

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

They’re running the wide rear opening bodywork package. As far as I’m aware they’ve only tested but not raced that spec before?

The secret sauce seems to be what behind those front gills and the tunnels immediately behind. Otherwise just the floor edge wing is the only difference you can see externally. The support rod is swept back a bit, very likley rear part of the tunnel is larger now. Won't be able to confirm unless one the drivers bins it.

Interesting, I see more photos with tufts. Two things I can't understand though: first - I see no camera to monitor the attitude of the tufts, especially the ones in the case of Merc, second - the tufts are much more rigid when what I've seen in the aviation.
So I wonder, maybe the tufts are connected to some sort of pressure/tension sensor, and the teams actually monitor something like the intensity and the frequency of the oscillations?

The turning vanes protrude from under the floor and have squared edges.
The ferrari's are tucked undee the leading edge of the floor and have rounded off edges.
Different things being done with the flow into and around the floor. I have no idea what it could be.
For Sure!!

anybody seen a shot of W14's cooling gills/louvres in Mexico gp? I was really surprised the other teams like haas brought huge gills on engine cover

I'd love to see some basic CFD comparisons of the rounded tunnels vanes vs what merc are running with the tall and straight ones.
