Did Hamilton do a mistake? I think he had a good track position coming to the track relatively early.

He had no grip; consequence of waiting with the blankets off apparently.

EDIT: Palmer said HAM made a mistake in S1 on his flyer.

He didn't have any grip through t1 to t3. It was not a mistake. It was due to cold tyres. You can clearly see it from his onboard.

Max was told to push on his outlap to get the temp in. Was Hamilton told as well?

I think the car was set up more for warmer temps, Because he lacked grip the entire session.

I should add track temp dropped by 7.3c during the session.

Everyone complained about not having grip. Verstappen said he had "zero grip" and called it "shocking".

yeah just confirmed that he didn't do any obvious mistake, i watched the onboard. just really bad S1 due to cold tyres. also a slight mistake during S2.

well, it could be better, but P5 is not the worst place to start, since all of our immediate rivals are right behind us. Russell dropped to P8 due to penalty.

Hamilton had a set of mediums puncture and used a set of hards. Not ideal for the allocation
He and the Astons pushed on the outlap. Even if they had less grip than usual, they still had more tire temperature than the Mercs

Yeah tyres didn't work for anyone and it was super low grip, hence Lance overperformance

I think Merc has subpar tyre warmup which does not help the drivers, especially with confidence.

Yeah, I feel like this is an inherent characteristic for the last two years at least, tyres take forever to light up in comparison to Ferrari/RBR. Has this anything to do with the nice tyre management of Mercedes or is it plainly a flaw?

The 2 go hand in hand. Merc for the past 10 years has been steadily developing their cars to be more kind on their tyres.
They seem to have found a good balance for most climatic conditions considering points are won in the race and not for quali.

I have a feeling they gone all out for high DF (and their usual rubbish drag) and i am worried they be sitting ducks on race day. I am not sure how high temps forecasted for for tomorrow, but Mclaren have the sweet spot set-up as they are still respectable straight line

Russell had the high downforce and won last year.
