I think they used 3 sets in FP3, like, an extra qualy practice run, but maybe I am just mistaken, regardless, your thinking makes sense. I saw that Max has two mediums left indeed, if graining is bad he can easily do a two stopper. He was quite confident the pace would be there. They took some wing out just prior to qualy, that was his only little doubt, but that was not a big one.

Ouch. It's beyond me how they can even admit to having him on for one more year. The only possible reason I can think off is there is some information about the car or it's characteristics that Perez knows about, and would be bad to leak out.

I can see them going for an aggressive 2-stop with max to take advantage of clean air. This will prevent max having to overtake Leclerc on track without a large tyre delta.

The cars behind Max (providing he starts well) will probably drop back quickly with graining if we look at Merc, alpine etc race pace in FP2/fp3. So the pitstop gap will open quickly.

I think Ver had the pace on the hards though. Considering how many cars he had to follow and pass at the end, he would have caught Leclerc even with tire disadvantage if that SC didn't happen. He didn't even want them to adjust the front wing during the SC pitstop.

Regarding the first stint, he ran the medium tires off trying to build that 1 second DRS gap, which is why he had to pit so early. Judgement call that did not work out.

Many quite desperate to invent a narrative for Verstappen but it was actually a very measured drive. Late braking into T1 with no grip is forgiveable. He received penalty and served it, just like many before him. I then watched his onboards from there and he was very patient with every overtake. Didnt' force the issue with Piastri, the Alpine, Perez, or Leclerc. The Russell overtake was patient and showed his car for a long time, but Russell turned in anyway. you cannot account for that (although maybe one should...considering it's Russell)

Great race and a Verstappen win. I think I'll go have a cry about it now.
