Given the reputation and history of the original author (if you mean BusinessF1), this should not have even featured on this site or forum let alone the FIA raising any issue or investigation about it. The forum idiots will be forum idiots, they will come and they will go, depending on the latest fad or fancy. However @Tomba, have to call you out here; why oh why have you let them hijack the forum and drive away the technical aspect and the men/women of reason who; regardless of the teams they support and despite differences of opinions, did not peddle in innuendo, supposition, personal agenda, armchair investigations of things/people they nothing about, peddle fictions as facts etc?
In all truth, tabloid origin or not, the thing got traction, all main outlets reported it, youtube hyped it, FIA started an investigation, and all teams, I repeat, ALL TEAMS agreed on something on the record.

Worth discussing, if you ask me, and actually kept quite civil by everyone.

Long experience has taught me this about the status of mankind with regards to matters requiring thought. The less people know and understand about them, the more positively they attempt to argue concerning them; while on the other hand, to know and understand a multitude of things renders men cautious in passing judgement upon anything new. - Galileo..

A rather sharp climb down from the FIA there. I'd assume some strongly worded letters from lawyers were sent to the FIA.
What lawyers? FIA is judge, jury and executioner in this case. IIRC, you can't bring an action against the FIA in a regular court of law.

The people are the lawyers in the court of public opinion. FIA had show their cards or fold.

Of course you can. You can't sue them for something relating to sporting matters, but defamation you most certainly could.
Still waiting for a few posters in here to make a climb down of their mind you, after being sure it was all true.

Wolff and Mercedes are so often the ones doing the damaging rumor spreading. Toto made many unfounded allegations during the budget cap saga to the point that school children were being bullied over it. We've had years and years of unfounded flexible car allegations from this team as well. He was not too concerned with reputational damages to the others at that time.

Most (if not all?) of which were followed up by regulation changes which cracked down on loopholes in regards to bodywork flex tests.. allegations that by all accounts hold water are a far cry from what has happened here.

Launching an investigation isn't defamation. The FIA is just doing their job there. As the governing body, they have every right to look into potential issues - and also to announce that they are doing so. That's part of the contract the teams agree to, when they participate in F1.

BusinessF1 is who is truly on the hook here, if Mercedes decides to take action.

Teams exploiting loopholes and cheating are two different things. Mercedes go out of their way to paint a negative light on their rivals, to cause reputational damage, on a regular basis. Hyperbole about budget caps, flexing wings, suggestive comments about legality of DRS systems and parity of cars between teammates...I can only express sympathy for Susie here. For the rest, it would be hypocritical.

So aghast by specious allegations that Merc had everything shut down and apology/denial letters from 9 rival teams within 24 hours. That is godfather stuff

If only such sensitivity to reputational damage worked this way for other teams...

It will be a loss loss situation for Merc if they file a suit against BusinessF1 because the issue here is the relationship between toto and suzie not merc and suzie..

Merc is in no position to testify on behalf of the husband and wife..

So if some people in an organisation does things that crosses the rules boundary, then it's ok for someone outside of that organisation, with a voice and platform to rile up the world around, which causes emotional and physical damages to other people of the organisation and their children? It's acceptable right?
