Perhaps this will age like milk in the desert, but it looks like they are more on the pace than expected. Long runs in practice and testing, while they weren't incredible, seemed to be in line with the teams around them (Sauber, Williams, Alpine).

When Hulk went P2 in Q2 all I could think of was the Top Gear film where Hammond talks about how the Aventador is supposed to prioritize handling and not top speed before showing how it's the fastest car Lamorghini has built with a top speed of 217 mph. Haas were like "we aren't going to focus on low fuel runs and we should be last" before getting both cars out of Q1 and one into Q3.

Good riddance to Steiner. If HAAS can find the max potential of their car setup quickly now, they can really drive Dallara in a better way to bring aero performance. Something critically missing since the teams inception.

The car is mechanically identical to the SF-24 and as the regs age and there is aero convergence; so there is no reason for Haas to be more than 0.5s/lap off of Ferrari. Theoretically there should be little to choose between them if Haas were run properly.

Steiner should have been fired after Australia 2019 when they had the same issues as 2018. Shows zero learning year-on-year. Just like 2019 they spent all of 2023 going "we've got a problem but aren't sure what causes it or how to solve it mid-season." Despite the fact that Steiner has a technical background (he was the guy they replaced with Newey at RB after all, lol) as an external viewer I have seen more engineering focus in this week of testing than the last five years at the team.

Are they more "boring" now? Sure. But they aren't a clown show anymore.

That's a massive, massive, massive oversimplification of everything related to performance and aero engineering

Haas won't make a break until they have their entire operation under one roof, make their own chasis and assemble the car in there as well. What started as a good business model is not enough now that survivng is not an issue and teams are cutting all unnecessary costs left and right. And already this year it will be clear Steiner was right to insist on that very same issue. Gene Haas wanted a scapegoat, it's as simple as that.
