Aston Martin AMR24

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I don't think Spec 5 sidepod undercut will ever come back as its constantly proving that drag reduction is not the way to go, but a evolution of spec 4 (deeper undercut into the sidepod while maintaining the edge dislocation for outwash and eddy(vortex for flow attachment). [...] If I was at Aston after multiple failed experiments of drag reduction since Canada, I would stick with just focusing on the current concept with increasing the under body and floor downforce and dropping the drag by running smaller wings.

But it did  a much more excavated and worked version of it that is, we can say farewell to the sidepod kick.

According to @Vanja the car shows clear signs of drag reduction, so after multiple failed experiments of drag reduction during 2023 they didn't shy away from trying to make it work once again.

Given that both the old and Austin parts were swapped frequently during the final races of the season depending on track requirements, they had to be close in terms of overall performance, but they must have seen that the big undercut had more potential.

Strange shapes at the floor/cell junction and in front
Edit: the two last arrows are similar to the previous car

Is the SIPS position relative to the occupant? Might help with the packaging.
.
I wonder if this is down to the new Mercedes engine/gearbox packaging as well. They made a lot of room for the W13/W14 radiators to be between the engine and gearbox which might have extended the cockpit to rear axle distance.
The SIPS longitudinal position is relative to the rear monocoque bulkhead / the C-C plane as far as I remember.
The radiators are before the engine, and W13-14 squeezed them so deep inside the monocoque to get those zeropods that it probably made their monocoque (fuel tank area) longer, hence the very forward cockpit.

Very similar sidepod undercut treatment and shapes, with a large and streamlined undercut + that downward sidepod flanc extension we saw on the Alpine that forms a ridge, a lateral barrier and a bottleneck with the floor that helps managing undercut flow and side flow.

Image
That AMR sidepod with the sharp bottom, has been modified. It does not match the track car.
Sharp bottom? the undercut doesn't change.
And it's really easy to have big undercuts with these cars nowadays.

Sadly there are no good photos of the rear yet, for sure not coincidental.

Beam wing looks to have changed at least

Another new small detail on AMR24. Looks like Aston made changes to cockpit area.

Tbh I am surprised that this area can be changed, I thought that they are already on the FIA rules limit. Looks like there is always room for improvement.

Isn't that just an IR sensor for the tires??

Ride height laser sensor. You often see them on FW and floor edges measuring flex.

Has Aston changed or dropped that rear wing side detail added last year? I think it should be seen from this angle but that is not the case

Is just a base car for their AMR24. We can't see a lot of small wings and their real "package". I think till test or even till the first race we should talk about only what we see and what we didn't.

I get what you mean but that seemed like the real car and a real wing. But sure we'll see soon
